Lab Policies & Procedures

  1. Our labs may be used only by current students, staff, and faculty of the College of Social Sciences (CSS).

  2. Please carry your University of Hawaii ID card with you while using our labs. You may be asked to present your ID at any time if there are any problems. If you don't have it, you may be asked to leave the lab.

  3. You must have a valid CSS network account in order to use lab computers. If you are new to the university, please talk to the lab monitors for help. They will direct you to the right resources. You will be asked for your student or employee ID information and current class name.

  4. Academic work by current CSS students takes precedence over all other uses of the lab, including but not limited to non-academic games, chatting, email, or web surfing. A user engaged in non-academic activity may be asked to give up his/her computer to allow another user to carry out legitimate academic work.

  5. By logging in to a computer, you agree to all CSS/UH Lab rules and policies. Failure to comply with any of the rules or policies will result in immediate account suspension or removal from the lab. Please refer to the UH IT Policy online at www.hawaii.edu/infotech/policies/itpolicy.html

  6. Users who try or attempt to vandalize (including the installation of a virus) the computer lab will be subject to appropriate discipline as mandated by the University of Hawaii.

  7. Use of the computer facilities should not interfere with the ability of other lab users to do academic work. Activities to be avoided include but are not limited to are loud conversation or laughter, use of offensive language, viewing of offensive or explicit imagery, cell phone calls, excessive volume of devices and other disruptive behavior.

  8. Be courteous to others in the lab by turning off your pager or cell phone ringer, and by taking all personal conversations and/or cell phone calls outside the lab. Abusive behavior toward other students or staff may result in suspension of lab privileges.

  9. Using our computer labs is on a first come, first served basis and cannot be reserved. Please do not attempt to reserve a computer by leaving your belongings at a station. If your computer is left unattended for 15 minutes or more, lab monitors may log you out of the computer, move your belongings and let other users have access to the computer.

  10. Please do not leave your personal belongings unattended. Lab monitors or staff are not responsible for lost, stolen, or moved items. It is your responsibility to keep your own property safe and secure.

  11. You MAY NOT install software on lab computers. If you need a specific piece of software for academic purposes, please talk to a lab monitor to find out the appropriate procedure for having it installed.

  12. Users are not allowed to reconfigure, personalize desktops, or alter another user's files. Please do not move computers or tamper with their cables.

  13. Computer lab hard drives are reconfigured once a semester, wiping out all saved files. Even though you are given public access storage on the lab network servers, please back up and save your files on removable media such as a ZIP disk or CD-RW. The College will not be responsible for loss of data, damage or loss of personal items. It is your responsibility to maintain periodic backups of your data.

  14. Users are given a quota to print 250 sheets per semester. As a courtesy to other students, do not print documents greater than 20 pages in length when other students are using the lab. A 20-page document can take 5 minutes or more to print, and another student should not have to be late for class while waiting to print a 2-page document. If you have large documents, please print them during off-peak hours when lab usage is low and clear it verbally with other students in the lab.

  15. Please DO NOT use any other types of paper for the lab printers because the wrong type of paper can be damaging. Use only what the lab provides.

Food and drink are prohibited in the computer lab. There are no exceptions. This policy protects the equipment from spills that could disable machines.. Please dispose of your own trash.

  17. Children are not permitted in the lab without adult supervision.

If anyone in the lab sees you engaging in such activity, you may be asked to stop and/or leave the computer lab immedietely. If you have legitimate academic need for viewing such materials (as verified by your instructor), please contact the computer support office about arranging a more private location where other users will not be offended.
