Mānoa Academy Beijing offers you the opportunity to complete a General Education Core requirement (SOCS 180) in the exciting cultural and political center of China. Course Theme

The primary theme of the course is health and aging in China, Hawaiʻi, and around the world. We will embed our discussion of aging related issues (i.e., perception and experience of aging, resilience/sustainability at individual, neighborhood, and community levels, health care system, etc.) within the major political, social, economic, cultural, and historical dimensions of globalization. 


Where You'll Study and Explore

  1. University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UHM): In Honolulu, delve into the theme of health and aging and develop an understanding of the landscape in Hawaiʻi. Receive boot-camp training in conversational Mandarin from the Confucius Institute at UHM. Gain fresh perspectives on China's ties with Hawaiʻi through special tours to historic and cultural sites, and meet some of Hawaii's most prominent leaders with strong ties to China.
  2. Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU): In Beijing, explore topics of health and aging, resilience and sustainability, social systems for health and community, and globalization. Explore cultural and historical landmarks including the Great Wall, the Summer Palace, and Tiananmen Square, and deepen your appreciation for Chinese culture through special activity options like calligraphy and tai chi.

Where You'll Stay

  1. In Honolulu, students may choose to reside in UHM residence halls or homestay.
  2. In Beijing, students reside in a shared room (double occupancy) in a modern hotel adjacent to the BFSU campus. BFSU is located in the heart of Beijing in the modern and exciting university district of Haidian.

  1. SOCS 180: Introduction to International and Global Studies (3) Introduces undergraduate students to the major political, social, economic, cultural, technological, and historical dimensions of globalization. Special attention will be paid to globalization process that has impacted Hawaiʻi and the Asia-Pacific region. A-F only. (Cross-listed as POLS 160) FGB

Who Can Apply?

Mānoa Academy Beijing seeks motivated, independent students who are eager for a unique global academic experience. Applicants may be incoming or current undergraduate UH Mānoa students in good academic standing. Talented high school seniors are especially encouraged to participate.


How to Apply

Applicants must complete the following:

Limited enrollment of 20 students - apply early for best consideration - students will be approved on a rolling basis.


Cost

UHM Summer tuition and fees. All in-country costs including accommodations, meals, ground transportation, excursions, and other program costs will be covered by a generous grant from the Han Ban and Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU). Round-trip airfare from Honolulu to Beijing is generously provided by Hawaiian Airlines. Visa and passport costs are not included.

  • Financial assistance may be available!!

A Mānoa Academy Beijing Orientation will be held (date/time TBA). Attendance will be mandatory.
