Student Testimonials

Richard Mizusawa

"The College of Social Sciences has and continues to provide students like myself with an educational experience that goes beyond expectations. Not only am I offered an exceptional education in the classroom, but the application of my knowledge outside of the classroom through real world experiences is what puts our college above many. Having the opportunity to intern at the State Capitol has really been one of the best experiences in college, and it is because of the connections I have made through our college that it was possible."

The need for change and the desire for change is clear. The path to change, however, seems less clear to many of us. The best part about this is that no matter which path you take, the results will be clear, and we may find that every action we take, no matter how small or big, makes the difference that the world is begging for. Every person has the chance to be a part of this every day. That's what keeps me going, and that's why I know I'll be an advocate for peace and social justice forever.

DC has a way of making sure you never want to leave. Working for Senator Hirono's office was a amazing learning experience that taught me more than just politics. I learned the true value of what it means to be a true servant leader for the people of Hawai‘i.

I thought I was going to be treated like one of those interns you see on TV where their lives become living hells. I did not have this experience. I was treated like family.

There wasn't a single day where I complained about going to work. I proudly entered the Dirksen Senate Office Building knowing that it was another day to work for the people of Hawai‘i and the USA.

"When first starting your internship, don't be afraid to show confidence and determination. If, you excel in your efforts early, you will most likely be given more responsibility, which in turn will lead to greater opportunities. So, to summarize, be Great."

"I wasn't sure what careers were available to Social Science majors post graduation, but the department offers a variety of internships to help you get experience and professors are quite candid when discussing their work and research."

"Spending a semester in Washington, D.C. as an intern really opened my eyes to the political process of our nation. Just being there taught me more than a classroom could and motivated me more than ever to pursue a career in politics."
